We do this, by creating a space that is fluid and responsive to the varying needs of contemporary creative practices.

We value and respect the creative process itself, not just the final results. Our measure of value isn’t the amount of work produced, but the opportunity to explore, practice, and develop creatively.

We welcome various identities and levels of experience while offering communal support and providing opportunities for connection and exposure to other creative fields.

The Founder

Nathan + Co(Fam) established Woodburn Creatives having witnessed a pain-point within the industry for creatives, lacking appropriate space to work in Sydney. Seven years on, he is a passionate initiator, leading with hands-on skills and design thinking. His approach considers the user experience using the tools, systems and environments. Nathan’s day-to-day role is involved in developing the business’ assets including community building, creative facilitation and support while managing leasing responsibilities and maintaining the physical space.

What excites Nathan most about the role?

“Engaging with people in persuit of creative exploration inspires me every day. The ideas, the challenges, the surprises, the vulnerability and the celebrations. There are so many uncapped possibilities and unique opportunities that I get to witness and/or contribute to.”

How Nathan seeks to make a difference...

“I believe in maximising opportunities in preparation for success. I focus on building strong foundations and assets that have great capability. It’s from there where I think you can tackle great problems and create lasting impact.

The space has a humble presence, it is comfortable and calm yet powerful and assured. It’s from this that we have the ability and confidence to think freely, take risks, be reflective and to grow.

I want to conceptually transcend the physical space and inspire the greater community with the creative energy that we represent.”

Our History

  • Woodburn Creatives founders were originally members of Makers Place a Not-For-Profit organisation which provided community facilities providing access to tools and education required for invention. This group resided in the Redfern Building which was run by another independent group.

  • The previous tenants left and the founders of Woodburn became the head operators of the Redfern building. Most of the spaces were empty, there were only a handful of artists in the space and a huge clean up was needed.

  • After taking over the studios we then created the Brand of Woodburn Creatives and created our website.

  • After filling up our 1st building we took on another space in waterloo to provide more spaces for creating!

  • After 2 action packed years, our 2nd building at Cope st Waterloo closed

    While things were thriving in the space, the owners have decided to move on their plans to turn this into their fashion house HQ.

    This space was such a great opportunity for us. In the time we’ve had it we’ve provided 33 artists, makers, producers and designers studios to work in. The event space has hosted 70 creative activations in the form of exhibitions, photo/film shoots, showcases, launches, workshops, fashion shows, screenings, panel talks, set and sculptural builds. It showed us not only our own potential but the potential of Sydney creatives when given the space to explore.
